Is the Chevy Equinox a Better Choice than the Mazda CX-5?

The Chevy Equinox has always been one of Chevy's best-selling SUVs. It fits comfortably in any budget, it's reliable, practical-and it looks good. If you're in the market for a crossover SUV, you can't go wrong with the Chevy Equinox. But there's always competition. Let's see how the new new Chevy Equinox  compares to the Mazda CX-5.

Exterior Design and Attractiveness

Chevy Equinox

Are you vain just because you want an SUV that looks good? Absolutely not. The Chevy Equinox zeroes in on exterior styling and creates something you'd love to be seen driving. Alluring LED headlamps, available fog lights, and multiple grille options become the first of many separating factors between the Equinox and Mazda CX-5. Add the fancy wheel designs, including available 20-inch machined wheels and available two-tone colorways, and you've got a modern SUV with almost as much style as you.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 carries a minimalist approach to its exterior design. It's not much to look at, but it does well by providing necessary features and a touch of modern cues. The honeycomb front grille design with bright LED headlights will stick to the minimalist idea. The standard 17-inch wheels blend in with the crowd, while the available 19-inch wheels can't quite match up to the 20-inch wheels on the Equinox.

Fuel Economy and Performance

Chevy Equinox

All models are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower. As far as capability goes, that's about average for a vehicle of this size-which means there's enough power to merge and quickly get up to speed on the highway in Newark or West Caldwell. However, the main focus for a crossover is fuel economy, and the Equinox nets an EPA-estimated 26/28 MPG city/highway on FWD models. Each trim can also run on E15 fuel-a more cost-effective unleaded fuel that's environmentally friendly. AWD is optional on all trims, while MacPherson front suspension and the multi-mode drive selector are standard.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is powered by a standard 2.5-liter engine with 187 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 26/31 MPG city/highway. The CX-5 does, however, offer a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with up to 256 horsepower. This setup is available on higher trim levels and will decrease fuel economy to an EPA-estimated 22/27 MPG city/highway. AWD is available on all trims.

Interior Comfort and Technology

Chevy Equinox

All Equinox models feature a stunning infotainment system featuring an 11-inch diagonal driver information center and an 11.3-inch color LCD with Google built-in and Apple and Android compatibility. You'll also enjoy an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot for quicker streaming on the go in Summit, NJ. The standard Equinox trim comes with cloth bucket seats, a 6-way manual driver's seat, remote start, and active noise cancellation to preserve your inner sanctity on the road.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5's huge trim selection means that you'll have to pay a lot more (more than $42,000) to get all the features you want. Across all models, you'll find the 10.25-inch full-color infotainment screen with Apple and Android compatibility-almost an inch less screen than the Equinox. Standard entries include cloth seats, a push-button start, and a tilt & telescopic steering wheel. However, we will admit that the CX-5 does offer premium upgrades. You'll have to judge if it's worth the cost.

Driver's Assistance and Safety

Chevy Equinox

The Equinox brings an array of driver's assistance and safety features as standard for all models. A bevy of alerts, ranging from forward collision to rear parking assistance, will help keep you aware of obstacles in Hanover, NJ-even the ones you don't see. A child LATCH system, safety locks, multiple airbags, and occupant presence detection ensure that your passengers are safe and secure.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 resembles safety and support on the road with standard features much like the Chevy Equinox. A LATCH system, multiple airbags, and anti-lock brakes are just a few of the overlapping features for each model. Alerts like blind spot monitoring and lane-keep assist will round out the entry-level safety features, while upgrades come at higher trim levels.
